State Farm Insurance

Trying to figure out where you stand with State Farm in Florida? You’re not alone. Maybe you already have a policy and want to know if you’re still getting a fair deal. Whatever brought you here, Think Safe Insurance can help you find solid footing.

State Farm Insurance Florida — Quick Summary

  • Still writing new business? Yes, but only for the right kind of home — inland, newer roof, built after 2001. Coastal properties and older roofs are usually turned away
  • Financial strength: State Farm Florida Insurance Company holds an A- (Excellent) rating from AM Best, with its outlook now stable, affirmed Nov 14, 2025. Its national parent (State Farm Mutual) was downgraded to A+ (Superior) from A++ the same month — a separate rating from your Florida property policy
  • 2026 rates: State Farm filed an average 10.1% auto insurance rate decrease in early 2026, a cumulative 20% drop since 2024, as Florida’s market keeps stabilizing
  • How to buy: State Farm only sells through its own captive agents — an independent agency like ours can’t quote or write a State Farm policy for you
  • What we can do instead: Show you exactly how a State Farm quote stacks up against the carriers we do write, or find you real coverage if State Farm says no

State Farm Insurance — A Little History

State Farm got its start in 1922 in Bloomington, IL, when Jacob “G.J.” Mecherle founded it as an auto insurer. Nearly a century later, it’s grown into one of the most recognizable names in insurance — a mutual company owned by its own policyholders, with a whole family of subsidiaries under the State Farm name. That includes a Florida-only property arm, State Farm Florida Insurance Company, which is the one that actually issues your homeowners policy here.

A fun bit of trivia while we’re here: a young Barry Manilow wrote the “Like a Good Neighbor” jingle back in 1971, long before he was a household name himself. Jake from State Farm showed up decades later, in 2011.

Is State Farm Still Writing New Homeowners Policies in Florida?

Technically, yes. But don’t assume that means your home qualifies. For families in Brandon, Valrico, and Riverview shopping for coverage, new business goes through State Farm Florida Insurance Company, and they’re being selective about who they take on. They tend to favor:

  • Homes further inland, away from coastal and barrier-island ZIP codes (especially in Monroe County)
  • Roofs under about 15 years old
  • Homes built after 2001, once Florida’s stronger building code kicked in
  • A clean claims history

If your home doesn’t check those boxes — maybe it’s closer to the coast, or the roof has some years on it, or it was built before the code changed — there’s a good chance State Farm will pass, even while technically still “writing” in Florida. That gap between what the ads promise and what actually gets approved is exactly why so many homeowners end up here, looking for a real answer.

Can You Trust State Farm’s Financial Strength?

Short answer: yes, but it depends which part of State Farm you’re actually asking about, since AM Best rates them separately:

  • State Farm Florida Insurance Company — the one protecting your home — carries an A- (Excellent) rating, and its outlook was just upgraded to stable in the most recent AM Best rating action on November 14, 2025.
  • State Farm Mutual — the national parent that handles auto insurance — was downgraded to A+ (Superior) from A++ that same day, after years of underwriting pressure across the industry.

Both companies are still solidly rated, and your Florida homeowners policy gets extra backing from the parent company’s reinsurance and capital support. Ratings can shift over time, so it’s always worth double-checking with your agent before you buy.

Is State Farm Really the Best Choice for Your Family?

State Farm is a household name for a reason, and there’s real financial strength behind it. But before you commit, it’s worth pausing on a few honest questions:

  • Does your home actually fit their current underwriting picture, or are you likely to get turned away?
  • Is the price you’re being quoted actually competitive, or just the only number you’ve seen?
  • Do you want an agent who only sells one company, or someone in your corner who can shop the whole market for you?

Can Think Safe Insurance Get You a State Farm Quote?

Think Safe Insurance - comparing State Farm insurance options in Florida

Honestly, no — and here’s why that’s actually good news for you. State Farm agents are captive agents: they only represent State Farm, full stop. We’re built the opposite way. As an independent agency right here in Brandon, we’re not loyal to any single company — we’re loyal to finding you the best fit, shopping your coverage across the Florida carriers we work with to protect what matters most to families across Hillsborough County.

Already have a State Farm quote in hand? Send it our way and we’ll show you exactly how it compares. And if your home got declined because of the coastline, the roof, or the build year — take a breath. That doesn’t mean you’re out of options. It very likely means we can still get you covered through one of our other trusted carriers.

It only takes about 15 minutes to get your information gathered. From there, we shop it across multiple carriers so you know — really know — you’re getting a fair price, not just the first offer that showed up. Call us at 813-425-1626 or request a quote online, and let’s get your home protected.

State Farm Insurance FAQ

Does State Farm still write new home insurance policies in Florida?

Yes, through State Farm Florida Insurance Company — but their appetite is narrow. Inland homes with newer roofs and post-2001 construction tend to get approved, while coastal properties and older roofs are commonly turned down.

Is State Farm financially stable?

Yes. State Farm Florida Insurance Company holds an A- (Excellent) rating from AM Best with a stable outlook. The national parent, State Farm Mutual, was adjusted to A+ (Superior) from A++ in November 2025 due to industry-wide underwriting pressure — that’s a separate rating from the Florida property side that protects your home.

Can an independent agent sell me State Farm insurance?

No — State Farm sells exclusively through its own captive agents. We can’t quote or bind a State Farm policy, but we’re happy to put your State Farm quote up against what else is out there so you can decide with confidence.

Are State Farm’s Florida rates going up or down in 2026?

Good news on this front: State Farm filed an average 10.1% auto insurance rate decrease in early 2026, part of a wider trend of Florida’s insurance market finally settling down after several rough years.

What if State Farm declines my home for coverage?

Take a breath — a decline from State Farm doesn’t mean something’s wrong with your home. It usually just means it doesn’t fit their current appetite. We work with several Florida carriers, each with different underwriting guidelines, and can very often find real coverage for homes State Farm turns away.

Who wrote the “Like a Good Neighbor” jingle?

A young Barry Manilow wrote “Like a Good Neighbor, State Farm Is There” back in 1971 — years before he became the Barry Manilow the world would come to know.

Greg at Think Safe Insurance is outstanding. If you're looking for someone who will take the time to understand your needs, explain your options, and find the right coverage at a fair price, Greg is the person to call. I met with Greg about six months ago after my auto insurance rates increased significantly. He carefully reviewed my policies and was able to save me hundreds of dollars per month while maintaining the same coverage on my two vehicles and motorcycle. The process was simple, straightforward, and completely stress-free. What impressed me most was Greg's knowledge, honesty, and willingness to help. He wasn't trying to sell me a policy—he was focused on finding the best solution for my situation. He answered all my questions, explained my options clearly, and made sure I understood exactly what I was getting. If you need auto, home, motorcycle, or other insurance coverage, I strongly recommend Greg and Think Safe Insurance. After seeing the results firsthand, I won't shop insurance on my own again—I'll let Greg handle it!

I'm no insurance specialist and never considered using one, I've always shopped around and never managed to still find superior coverage for a reasonable price. Greg assisted me in finding not only an incredibly priced policy but my coverage is x3 better than my overpriced State Farm policy... what a scam these companies are. Protect yourself against being taken advantage of, you have one body. I'm glad I have Think Safe to guarantee I know I'll be taken care of
